Crochet Neon Stripe Scarf

  Crochet Neon Stripe Scarf

This is a quick and easy scarf that has stripes without using 6 different colored balls of yarn. The secret is to use a self-striping yarn, not a multi-colored yarn.

  Neon Stripes

  Alternate color - Primary Stripes

Designed By: Suzanne Cowles (Sassy Catt) ©

Skill Level: Easy, beginner

Technique: Crochet, worked in rows

Terms: US

Category: Scarf

Hook Size: Clover J (6.0 mm)

Yarn: Red Heart - Super Saver – Neon Stripes. 100% Acrylic. $4.29

Yarn Weight: Size 4 worsted weight

Yarn Required: 1 full skein (236 yards)

Finished Size: 5” wide, 79” long plus fringe, each stripe is 1” tall

Stitches: HDC (Half Double Crochet), CH (Chain), SC (Single Crochet), T (Turn)

Gauge: Will be determined by the hook chosen. There is approximately 115” of each color (black, purple, blue, orange, pink, yellow). 4.1” of yarn required for each HDC.

You must HDC through an entire colorway to figure out how many stitches there are in each color.

First chain through black, turn. Start HDC in next color. Be consistent in tension. Once the entire colorway is finished, count the number of HDC in each color.

I got: 30 yellow, 28 orange, 27 pink, 28 purple, 28 blue, 27 black. Look for the common even number, which is 28. Divide number in half (14). There are 14 HDC in each row, 7 right side, 7 wrong side. Undo the stitches.

Notes: I wash the yarn first to remove the starch.

The important thing here is to end the wrong side row in that same color, and start the new row in the next color. The way to make that work out precisely is to use a smaller hook or tighter tension on a few stitches (up to 6). This project requires a lot of ripping out, but the result is worth it.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Foundation: Start at beginning of black. Ch 14, T.

Row 1: In black, Ch 1, HDC across (14), T.

Row 2: In black, Ch 1, SC across (14), Ch 2, T. End in black.

Row 3: Start next color, HDC across (14), Ch 2, T.

Row 4: Repeat row 3. End in that color.

Row 5: Start in black, HDC across (14), Ch 2, T.

Row 6: Repeat row 5. End in black.

Row 7 - ?: Keep going until you reach the desired legnth. Always end in black.

 Add fringe.

Planned Pooling Crochet Patterns

One Skein Scarf Projects

This is a quick and easy project to make a 1 skein multi-colored scarf muffler using similar techniques to planned pooling (argyle pattern). The main difference is you don't have to mess with getting the exact color in each single crochet stitch, adjust tension or change hooks. Instead, this is all about consistency and using the same tension.

Start out with any multi-colored acrylic yarn that has 3 - 6 colors in each repeat, such as Red Heart Super Saver. I used these:

  Zebra

  Platoon

  Mistletoe

  Fall

This yarn is a bit scratchy until laundered. You can wash the yarn first before construction or wash after the scarf is complete (but before adding the fringe). No need to block.

Ball the yarn. Pull out an entire colorway. Mistletoe is red, white, green, white. Select a Clover hook between G - J.

Chain through the entire colorway, leaving a red chain on the hook. Count the chains. Decide how wide you want the scarf, between 6 - 8" wide or 20 - 26 stitches. SC into 2nd chain from hook.

Using the dish cloth pot holder Linen stitch (SC, sk1/ch1) work across. Chain 2 at end and turn. The next row works the same stitch into each chain space created. At the end of the row, crochet into the ch2 space.

When you have established a pattern that looks good, finish off the whole ball at the same time. I use a different yarn for fringe. This is Caron Simply Soft White.

Each yarn will look different in the end. The fun part is the experimentation of starting in different parts of the colorway.

Men's Crochet Fold Over Beanie Hat

 Free Crochet Pattern

This is an easily adjustable beanie hat for an adult male with a 23" crown circumference (medium). *Note - hats should be smaller than the actual head size due to stretching.

It's 9 1/2" long, so that it can be folded over to make a brim. Most beanie style or skull-hugging hats stop mid ear. This one can be positioned to cover the whole ear.

Flattened out the finished measurements are: 10 1/2" wide, approx 21" around.

Yarn: Lion Brand - Heartland Tweed - Black Canyon. This 100% acrylic yarn is very soft and slightly thicker than the average worsted weight yarn. The black color due to the heathered nature, actually looks more charcoal gray than true black. The accent color slubs woven into the yarn are very subtle.

Skill level: Easy

Hook: Clover I (5.5 mm)

Stitches: HDC - Half Double Crochet, INC - 2 HDC together

Top back of hat, starts with a magic ring.

Round 1: 8 hdc in ring (8)

Round 2: inc around (16)

Round 3: (inc, hdc)* 8 Xs (24)

Round 4: (inc, hdc, hdc)* 8 Xs (32)

Round 5: (inc, hdc, hdc, hdc)* 8 Xs (40)

Round 6: (inc, hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc)* 8 Xs (48) This flat part is 6” diameter.

Round 7 - 15: 48 hdc around (48) This makes sides.

Round 16: inc, 16 hdc, inc, 16 hdc, inc, 13 hdc (51)

Round 17: inc, 17 hdc, inc, 17 hdc, inc, 14 hdc (54)

Round 18: inc, 18 hdc, inc, 18 hdc, inc, 15 hdc (57)

Round 19: inc, 19 hdc, inc, 19 hdc, inc, 16 hdc (60)

Round 20 - 25: hdc around (60) This part will fold up to make cuff. Slip Stitch at end.

Braided Crochet Shawl

Braided Crochet Shawl Pattern

This easy rectangular shawl is constructed in rows using (DC) double crochet stitches and 6 chains to form Jacob's Ladder. The ends have a ruffled trim made from DC increases. There are 6 Jacob's Ladder and 7 sections of 6 DC. (No need to SC around the edges.)

Hook: Clover J (6 mm)

Yarn: Ice Brand, Bamboo Classic in Dark Teal. 50% bamboo/50% micro acrylic. 100 grams, 251 yards each skein. Size 3 yarn with "S" twist, but could substitute any worsted weight 4. I used less than 3 skeins.

Finished size: 16" wide X 59" long.

Chain 78 + 1

Row 1: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 5 chains. *(Ch 6/Sk 6), 6 dc* repeat across. (78)

Row 2 - 60: 5 dc, *(Ch 6/Sk 6), 6 dc* repeat across. (78)

If you want the length to be different, increase or decrease the number of rows.

Do the Jacob's Ladder technique when finished. Turn piece with short end towards you, go up one column of chains pulling a loop through. Secure with a stitch marker that locks. Do the same to the other chain columns.

Trim is just something I made up to use the ruffle technique, but you can add your favorite. While doing the end trim, secure the top loop of the Jacob's Ladder.

Small Candle: WalMart – in boxed set of 5, use 3 small candles.

Adjust height as needed by adding an extra set of rows 6 & 7.

Crochet Tassel Scarf

This Tassel Scarf pattern was designed by Alla Koval and published in Interweave Crochet Magazine Accessories 2011, page 129.  The piece can be worn as a scarf or a belt. The pattern has both written instructions and a symbol chart.

I made mine as a scarflette using 1 skein of Caron Simply Soft Ombre in Avocado. This size 4 worsted weight yarn is very soft and ranges in colors from a light yellow green to medium avocado. 204 yards will make 4 crescent shapes and 3 small tassels using a Clover H Hook (5 mm). One motif is 8 1/2" high by 13" wide, 42" long over all.

Alla has beautiful original crochet & knit designs available on Ravelry or her website My Little City Girl.
