EXCERPT PAGE 6: MEET THE CREEPLER:

The hunter became aware of a maniacal presence. Something was behind him that had not been there before. Losing focus on the bird, he warily turned around. A terrifying misshapen figure met his apprehension.

Before his eyes could process the visual overload, a razor webbed claw thrashed through the air knocking him into the sludge. Forcefully strewn blood droplets spattered the landscape.

A flash of sinister eyes and savage jaws descended upon his paralyzed body. Brackish waves crashed in the tumultuous battle.

The Creepler made a recurring sound, like a symphony of male Cicadas hissing in the afternoon. It screamed and shrieked between going under water.

A scaly appendage knocked the crossbow from the hunter’s grasp. The weapon floated for a second, then sunk into the blackness.

He gasped for air as he struggled to get his head above water, before plunging back down beneath the murk. The duckweed spread covering the stagnant water’s surface, leaving no trace of a disturbance. Only silence and dead calm remained.

“What am I supposed to do with all these bodies?” Karl said.

“Put ‘em in the overflow,” Tyrell said.

“Did that already.”

“Then send ‘em over to County General.”

“Man, where have you been? That was last Monday. They won’t take anymore.” Karl swung open the insulated aluminum door of the Morgue’s deep freeze to reveal piles of rotting corpses, mile-high, all gleaming in a gelatinous residue.
Tyrell shook his head in disbelief. “Don’t make no sense. Why are they oozing like that in here?” The thermometer read minus four degrees.

“I get the willies from that putrid smell. Shut the door. It’s time for our break anyway.”

As Karl and Tyrell sauntered out of the Depository, the Medical Examiner, Dr. Wendy Singer brushed past. Feeling immense pressure from the Holy Cross Hospital Administrator to solve Pleasantville’s latest mystery, no one knew why the bustling Middle America city’s residents were dropping dead like ducks at a carnival shooting range.
