Crochet Neon Stripe Scarf

  Crochet Neon Stripe Scarf

This is a quick and easy scarf that has stripes without using 6 different colored balls of yarn. The secret is to use a self-striping yarn, not a multi-colored yarn.

Skill Level: Easy, beginner

Technique: Crochet, worked in rows

Terms: US

Category: Scarf

Hook Size: Clover J (6.0 mm)

Yarn: Red Heart - Super Saver – Neon Stripes. 100% Acrylic. $4.29

Yarn Weight: Size 4 worsted weight

Yarn Required: 1 full skein (236 yards)

Finished Size: 5” wide, 79” long plus fringe, each stripe is 1” tall

Stitches: HDC (Half Double Crochet), CH (Chain), SC (Single Crochet), T (Turn)

Gauge: Will be determined by the hook chosen. There is approximately 115” of each color (black, purple, blue, orange, pink, yellow). 4.1” of yarn required for each HDC.

You must HDC through an entire colorway to figure out how many stitches there are in each color.

First chain through black, turn. Start HDC in next color. Be consistent in tension. Once the entire colorway is finished, count the number of HDC in each color.

I got: 30 yellow, 28 orange, 27 pink, 28 purple, 28 blue, 27 black. Look for the common even number, which is 28. Divide number in half (14). There are 14 HDC in each row, 7 right side, 7 wrong side. Undo the stitches.

Notes: I wash the yarn first to remove the starch.

The important thing here is to end the wrong side row in that same color, and start the new row in the next color. The way to make that work out precisely is to use a smaller hook or tighter tension on a few stitches (up to 6). This project requires a lot of ripping out, but the result is worth it.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Foundation: Start at beginning of black. Ch 14, T.

Row 1: In black, Ch 1, HDC across (14), T.

Row 2: In black, Ch 1, SC across (14), Ch 2, T. End in black.

Row 3: Start next color, HDC across (14), Ch 2, T.

Row 4: Repeat row 3. End in that color.

Row 5: Start in black, HDC across (14), Ch 2, T.

Row 6: Repeat row 5. End in black.

Row 7 - ?: Keep going until you reach the desired legnth. Always end in black.

 Add fringe.
