Designed By: Suzanne Cowles (Sassy Catt) ©

Skill Level: Easy, beginner

Technique: Crochet, worked in rounds

Terms: US

Category: Homewares

Hook Size: Clover G (4.0 mm)

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Party Yarn – Black Sparkle & Chocolate Sparkle, 100% acrylic

Yarn Weight: Size 4, 85 grams, 164 yards

Yarn Used: Large uses 49 yards. Small uses 14 yards.

Finished Size: 6 1/2” tall, 3” tall

Stitches: CH (Chain), DC (Double Crochet), SL (Slip Stitch), HDC (Half Double Crochet)

V Stitch = 2 DC, CH 3, 2 DC

Increase = 2 DC (large), 2 HDC (small)

Shells = 7 DC, CH 1 (large), 5 DC, CH 1 (small)

Gauge: Will be determined by the hook chosen.

Notes: Since the top row is a shell, there is no need to finish with sc.

Keep the yarn on the outside of the glass and away from the flame.

Peel off the label and stick to the bottom of candle.

Large Candle: WalMart - Better Homes, jar with lid.

Small Candle: WalMart – in boxed set of 5, use 3 small candles.

Adjust height as needed by adding an extra set of rows 6 & 7.

Rounds 6 & 7 are made in an alternating pair. I used 3 sets on the shorter candle and 4 sets on the taller candle.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Large Candle:

The Bottom:

F: Make a magic ring or CH 5 ring.

Round 1: CH 3, 11 DC in ring, SL (12)

Round 2: CH 3/DC, *INC around*, SL (24) Close bottom hole.

Round 3: CH 3/ DC, *INC, DC around*, SL (36)

Round 4: CH 1/HDC, *HDC around*, SL (36)

Round 5: CH 1, *INC of HDC, 8 HDC*, SL (40)

The result is a cup that covers about 1" of side height. It will fit tight around the glass base. If it's too tight use a 4.5 mm hook.

The Sides:

Round 6: CH 6/DC, CH 3/SK 7, *V stitch, CH 3/SK 7* around, SL in starting CH 3. (5 V stitches)

Round 7: SL into V stitch space, CH 3/6 DC in space, CH 1, *7 DC/CH 1* around, SL into starting CH 3 then SL 3 more chains ending in middle of shell (5 shells)

Small Candle:

The Bottom:

F: Make a magic ring or CH 5 ring.

Round 1: CH 3, 11 DC in ring, SL (12)

Round 2: CH 3/DC, *INC around*, SL (24) Close bottom hole.

This size 4 worsted weight yarn is very soft and ranges in colors from a light yellow green to medium avocado. 204 yards will make 4 crescent shapes and 3 small tassels using a Clover H Hook (5 mm). One motif is 8 1/2" high by 13" wide, 42" long over all.

This is a great use for left over yarn. It also will keep clothes from slipping off the hanger, as well as protect against the puffy shoulder problem (hanger end point fabric stretching).

Hook : Clover size 7 (4.5 mm)

Yarn: Size 4 worsted weight (Caron - Simply Soft - Paints), 37 yards each half (2 balls this size if crocheted tightly)

Shell stitch = 2dc, ch1, 2dc

Directions (Make 2):

Rd 1: Ch5 make ring (pull hole closed), ch3, dc, ch1, (2dc, ch1) x3, slip stitch to top of beginning ch3.

Rd 2: Slip stitch twice to ch sp. Make 1 shell in each ch sp. (4)

Rd 3: Slip stitch twice to ch sp. Make 1 shell in each ch sp. (4) Add ch1 between 2 opposite shells (this is increase). Mark the increase chain. (The shells without chains between is the hanger fold line.)

Rd 4: Slip stitch twice to ch sp. Make 1 shell in each ch sp. (4) Add ch2 between 2 opposite shells.

Rd 5-13: Repeat round 4 adding one more chain increase to each row. Knot, leave tail.

Crochet Amigurumi Elephant

Annie's Crochet Animal Amigurumi to Crochet: 8 Adorable Designs by Teri Crews, available at Amazon. Teri has other patterns for sale at Ravelry.

I made changes to the "Simply Cute Elephant" on page 2 crochet pattern to make it look more Indian inspired than circus themed: such as a different neck collar with attached beads, a jeweled headband, leg bands and a bow on the chain tail.

I also added pink inserts to the ears. If I made this again, I would make different shaped ears than round, because these ears look like mouse ears.

Hook: Clover size H (4 mm)

Yarn: Caron Simply soft

Shallow Basin Book Review

Written by: Victoria Irwin on May 6, 2014 and posted at TheGeekGirlProject.

FIVE STARS!

Shallow Basin by Suzanne Cowles is part-monster story, part-tale of the frightening behavior of human beings. Set in a small Southern town of Stray Oaks, the novel follows high school senior Beau Boudreaux as he navigates the dangerous waters of pending adulthood and the creature of the swamps known as the Creepler. Beau is the son of a World Famous bass fisherman and a sweet Christian woman with a troubled past. His girlfriend is a wannabe actress named Saylor, known for her cheerleading and wicked attitude. As Beau approaches the end of high school, he must confront his father and tell him that he does not wish to be a lawyer. All the while, a wicked Mayor and his lackey are trying to steal land from a witch in the bayou. The Creepler, a vicious reptile-like creature, protects the land and begins to kill those who venture into the swamp. Beau has to survive not just his day-to-day life, but also the dangers of the Creepler.

While the Creepler does sound like a cool creature and total monster-movie fodder, he unfortunately takes a serious back seat to the more frightening drama of a small town community. Cowles describes every affair, every mistake, every unplanned pregnancy of the characters in this book. The feeling at times can be overwhelming and reminded this reviewer far too much of spending time with my relatives from the South. Witchcraft and murders plague the town, while the terrifying Creepler seems innocent compared to the cover-ups and plots of the townspeople.

Shallow Basin makes it hard to actually care about any of the characters. All of them are tragically flawed or just terrible people in general. However, how many of the characters meet their ends seem to be too over the top to match their transgressions. Saylor, for example, may be a total nightmare of a human being, but her attack is both incredibly violent towards women and utterly horrifying. Her ordeal reminded me a great deal of the film Prometheus, with equal levels of terror.

If you’re a fan of family drama and swamp monster movies, Shallow Basin is your book.

FIVE STARS!

Shallow Basin is absolutely amazing! It’s fast paced and well written. The dysfunction and evil weaved together made a tremendous story. Cowles did an amazing job at keeping me interested throughout. I can not write much more without giving away spoilers. All I can say is, if you have not read this yet, you should. I look forward to the next book in the series. Well done Suzanne!

FOUR STARS!

Beau Boudreaux is a high school senior living in the small town of Stray Oaks. He's dating the hottest girl in school, his father is a Pro Fisherman celebrity, and he's been accepted to college. It's just not the college he wants to attend, she's not the girlfriend he sees himself with for the rest of his life, and his father is only that in front of the cameras.

With graduation looming ever closer, Beau has some honesty to pass around if he wants to live his life the way he dreams of. But in Stray Oaks where everyone has secrets, there is a local legend that just might not be fiction at all, but a blood thirsty beast with an agenda of its own.

SHALLOW BASIN was listed as a YA Horror, but it didn't quite strike me as such. There is some mature content that may or may not work for a YA novel, but even so, it was a fun summer read book that kept me reading and guessing, and wondering what could possibly be in store for Book 2?

Judge's Commentary:

SHALLOW BASIN by Suzanne Cowles is the first installment in what promises to be a trilogy of stories that will be of great interest to lovers of tales of the occult.

The unique front cover photograph of an ominous swamp offers visual interest right away, setting the tone for the movie poster slug "Something is Eating the Competition." The back cover has a prominent author photo and biography with link to the author's professional web site. I visited it and found it to be very interesting and up to date, giving me a glimpse into who Cowles is as an artist.

The complex story has great character conflicts that readers can relate to, such as fighting against their own wishes versus what others want them to do. Cowles does a great job of handling emotion in the story with subtle nuances. I could imagine myself feeling what the characters were feeling, especially their terror and dread. It is rare for an author to write with such care and sensitivity, which gives the story real dimension, even though the main plot has many scary elements. I think readers will appreciate this winning combination of Horror and Drama, and will eagerly anticipate the next installment.
